Laura Valentina Cifuentes Almanza
Class of 2023
Laura Cifuentes is a Bogotá-based multi-disciplinary artist specializing in time-based media, poetry, and textiles. In 2020 she obtained her B.A. in Media Studies and Sociology at Loras College in Dubuque, IA. Where she graduated with honors and was elected Sociology student of the year. Laura looks to shine a light on different problems in society and applies heavily sociological research in the creation of her pieces. Moreover, through her heavily political work, she shows the connections between the individual and society and how everything is interconnected.
Laura has been the recipient of several awards for her documentaries and films. Her documentary Ana Maria won “Best Documentary” at the Iowa College Media Association Awards in 2020. Her work has also been exhibited at Broad Ideas in Galena, IL in the year 2018 and 2019, she received the “Broad Ideas” grant in the year 2020. She has also been part of the team that was the recipient of the award “That’s A Wrap” for their film “Sliced” in 2019 at the International Julien Dubuque Film Festival.
