Waiting for a Connection
Juliet Walzer, Waiting for a Connection, 2022
Waiting For A Connection is a drawing series that prompts conversation about online school- ing during the pandemic. This body of work captures snippets of zoom sessions in the form of portrait drawings, forcing the audience to pay attention to each individual child. My work pins each of their zoom squares to allow the viewers a small peek into their personal space, which normally goes unseen and unknown when schooling is in person. Students sit with their cameras angled at a worm’s eye view or find cor- ners of their homes with neutral backgrounds to try to provide as little exposure of their home life as possible. Nonetheless these actions in them- selves are revealing. Waiting for A Connection is about the struggle to connect emotionally and fulfill the same bonding experiences that regular classrooms aim to create. The work is presented into a book of drawings that will be on display in harmony with a performance piece where I will read children’s responses to the prompt “ What is or was the hardest part of COVID19?”
