How to Get Lost: A Manual and a Map

Lisa Lee Freeman, Points Last Seen, 2022

How to Get Lost: A Manual and a Map is a mixed-media installation that includes a book of essays and three large-scale, abstract artworks on paper and canvas. It explores the many ways in which we can get lost in the world, and how we navigate that state of chaos and uncertainty.

I create my artwork using scribbling and ink-pouring and -splattering techniques to conjure turbulent landscapes, which I map and annotate with cartographic lines and symbols and gestural mark-making, representing the frenzied energies of things and people moving around the planet. I then navigate through these manic, colorful geographies with pencils, markers, paint, and charcoal.

The book and artworks were inspired by my research into the history and science of navigation and related fields, including cartography, neurobiology, meteorology, aeronautics, and astronomy. How to Get Lost: A Manual and a Map also draws from personal narratives of upheaval and disorientation in an era of pandemic and environmental and geopolitical turmoil, and reflects on what it looks and feels like to lose our bearings and where it can lead us.
