Jeremy Cohan
Art and Politics
Dr. Jeremy Cohan is a sociologist who works on critical social theory, political economy, psychoanalysis, US education, and social movements. At SVA, he is also the Director of the Undergraduate Honors Program, organizes the Art and Politics Lecture Series, and was Acting Chair as well as a founding faculty member of the MA Program in Critical Theory and the Arts. He teaches on classical and contemporary social theory, the Frankfurt School, democracy, political economy, art and politics, philosophy and social theory, the Renaissance, fascism, feminism and the sociology of the family, and contemporary social problems. He has presented to the American Sociological Association, the Social Science History Association, the International Sociological Association, the Cultural Studies Association, the Social Theory Workshop, and the Economic and Political Sociology Workshop. He has written for The Point and Damage Magazine, and has a forthcoming contribution on US education in a volume on political economy and social movements. He is a founding member and former president of the Society for Psychoanalytic Inquiry. He is a practicing musician, who sings with a new music ensemble, and is politically active with the Democratic Socialists of America. He has a BA in Philosophy and Music from the University of Chicago, and an MPhil and PhD from New York University.
